CWG scams: 1000+ crores to renovate stadiums?

New Delhi, Jan 16: The CBI is set to file a fresh FIR against Organizing Committee (OC) members and officials related to their alleged involvement in misappropriation of funds in renovation of stadiums. The agency has even planned to summon OC chief Suresh Kalmadi again for probing.

The sources said that while minor complaints of misappropriation of funds would be handed over to the central vigilance officers of the department concerned, the CBI would take only cases where alleged bunglings ran into several crores of rupees.

A senior official of the agency, which was examining complaints forwarded by the Central Vigilance Commission (CVC), said that some decisions were made at the last moment, only to benefit some firms and contractors to charge more.

The CPWD had renovated Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium Complex, Indira Gandhi Stadium Complex, Dr Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Swimming Pool Complex, Major Dhyanchand National Stadium and Dr Karni Singh Shooting Range for the CWG that held between Oct 3 to 14, 2010.

The cost for the renovation of five CWG venues by the central works department had escalated by over Rs 1,110 crore, according to the documents of CPWD.

"A consolidated sum of Rs 1,000 crore (plus or minus 10 per cent) was sanctioned for these stadia initially. No stadium-wise cost was approved. Later, revised sanction for Rs 2,460 crore was accorded by the Cabinet," the CPWD documents said.

Four scam cases have been already registered against Kalmadi and his close aides of OC, related to their alleged criminal conspiracy and financial irregularities in executing certain contracts.
