No DMU plant at Sankrail due to CPI-M''s opposition: Mamata

Singur (WB), Jan 13 (PTI) The proposed DMU plant atSankrail would not be set up following the ruling CPI-M''sopposition to the project, Railway minister Mamata Banerjeesaid today.

"We wanted to set up the DMU factory at Sankrail. Butit will not come up there. I will announce tomorrow or dayafter where the unit will be set up. But it will come up inBengal," Banerjee said at a railway programme here.

She said that the land at Sankrail would remain withthe Railways.

Banerjee said that the CPI-M had earlier asked why thefactory had not been set up, and then the party opposed itwhen it was decided to set up the Diesel Multiple Unit (DMU)plant.

The Rail Kortrik Odhigrihito Jomiharader Committee(RKOJC), which is reportedly backed by CPI-M, has opposed themove to set up the DMU at Sankrail in Howrah district.

Besides a written commitment from the Railway Boardbefore the work could be allowed to start, RKOJC has demandedbetter compensation and jobs.

While Tata Motors had completed 80 per cent of itsproject in Singur, the proposed railway unit was yet to start.

Unlike the land issue at Singur, there has been nosuch problems regarding its acquisition from farmers for therailway project in Howrah district.
