HC orders notice to TN on petition seeking to prohibit drunken

driving

Chennai, Jan 12 (PTI): The Madras High Court today orderednotice on a writ petition seeking a direction to authoritiesto ensure that all those who visit TASMAC liquor shops andbars are prevented from driving after drinking.

The First bench, comprising Chief Justice M Y Eqbal andJustice T S Sivagnanam ordered notice on a PIL by one ANarayanan, a social worker.

In his petition,Narayanan contended that if police areserious about implementing the rule of law, all those whodrive ehicles after drinking at bars should be immediatelybooked for drunken driving.

Stating that the number of licences cancelled,suspendedand action taken against drunken drivers was not adequate andcommensurate with the number of violations, he also prayed fora direction to the authorities to affix a label on liquorbottles that drunken driving was against the law. Violatorsshould be prosecuted swiftly, he said.
