PM calls round 2 meeting on price hike

PM Manmohan Singh
New Delhi, Jan 12: The economist Prime Minister Manmohan Singh called for a high-profile meeting for the second day to counter the price hike on Wednesday, Jan 12.

Within a short span prices of basic commodities have skyrocketed, particularly the price of onions. The price of onions has gone up by a record 82 percent, which made the Indian Janatha cry. The price rise on vegetables, milk and other commodities have caused the inflation to reach a whopping 18.32 percent.

Skyrocketing food prices and series of corruption and scams have hit the UPA government at the very beginning of the year. Meanwhile, NDA government is trying to cash in on the issue as much as possible by conducting rallies.

Tuesday's meeting was attended by Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee, food and agriculture minister Sharad Pawar and planning commission deputy chairman Montek Singh Ahluwalia, but the talks remained undetermined.

On Wednesday, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh summoned the Agriculture Minister to preside over a meeting attended by other key officials within the ministry. Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar and Agriculture Secretary will attend the meeting. Once they arrive at a positive strategy to tackle price rise, it would be later briefed to PM Manmohan Singh.
