Curfew relaxed, no fresh violence in Assam-Meghalaya border

Shillong, Jan 12 (PTI) No fresh incident was reportedtoday from the ethnic violence-hit Assam-Meghalaya borderareas, with the administrations relaxing curfew on both sides.

In the Resubelpara sub-division in Meghalaya''s EastGaro Hills district, curfew was relaxed for three hours from12 noon, official sources said.

In Assam''s Goalpara, only night curfew from 6 pm to 6am will be imposed from today in four police station areas ofDudhnoi, Krishnai, Rangajuli and Dhupdhara, district deputycommissioner P K Goswami said.

Thirty-nine relief camps for about 35,000 displacedpopulation of both Rabha and Garo community are stillfunctioning.

"One relief camp for about 1,600 Garo community peoplehas been closed today as the people wanted to return to theirvillages," Goswami said.

Over 170 arsonists have been apprehended in Goalparaso far, the officer said.

Some 19,000 people are sheltered in relief camps inMeghalaya and officials said displaced people were coming fromAssam side to join them.

At least nine persons have been killed in the ethnicflare up that lasted for ten days since January 1.
