Election Commission on Facebook!

New Delhi, Jan 8: Social Networking sites seem to be the new buzz word and people and organisations across the world seem to be cashing in on its popularity and reach. The latest one to get into the Facebook bandwagon seem to be the Election Commission (EC).

The Election Commission will soon have its own Facebook account and will join the ranks of other government departments like the Ministry of External Affairs in using social networking sites to reach out to people.

"It is a very good idea. We can have an Election Commission Facebook account. We are creating one. We need to reach out to people. We will develop that," Chief Election Commissioner S Y Quraishi was quoted as saying.

The EC was looking for a suitable name as there was an account with a similar name registered in England, he said replying to a question on whether EC should have a Facebook account. Numerous Government departments like the MEA, Delhi Traffic Police, Mumbai Police, Jammu and Kashmir Traffic Police and the Municipal Corporation of India have opened Facebook accounts to interact with people and improve their efficiency.
