Double-tears for onion buyers

Onion prices have seen a record hike at this time of the year and the middle-class seem to be the most affected by this shocker of a news. The hike is reflected in all cities and stands at Rs 80 per kg. Reports suggest that the shortage is due to the untimely rains that played havoc to onion farmers. Till Dec 17, Friday onion prices were bordering in the Rs 20- 25 bracket and shot up to a shocking 60-65 Rs over the weekend.
The prices were last reported at Rs 80 per kg in Chandigarh, Rs 35 for a kilo in Chennai, Rs 70 per kg in Bangalore due to floods in northern Karnataka. There has been a drop in prices in Mumbai, from Rs 55 to Rs 35.
