Son competes as father lay dead

Thiruvananthapuram, Dec 20: Sujith Kumar turned out to be the fastest sprinter of the ongoing state athletics meet on Sunday, Dec 19. On the same day his father and trainer former Asian Games silver medalist Murali Kuttan was died following a major cardiac arrest. Sujith's father demise was not revealed for 12 hours.

The 56-year-old Murali's wife former Olympian Mercy Kuttan, requested media not flash the news and disturb Sujit.

Sujith was told that his father was admitted to hospital due to some uneasiness. After finishing 100 meters race by setting a time record of 10.09 seconds the 18-year-old Sujit was rushed to hospital to where Murali was taken.

Mercy and Murali first met at the selection camp for the Moscow Olympics in 1980. They were the first couple to win the national championships. Last year they started an academy to train the talent athletes.
