Yahoo plans to 'sunset' Delicious with Buzz
The rumor about Yahoo sunsetting was spread in media after the leak of an internal slideshow that was given to Yahoo employees. In the slideshow, Yahoo showed three categories, Sunset, Merge and Make Feature, as a plan to make the company profitable in 2011 and beyond.
The leaked slide was posted on Twitter by by MyBlogLog founder Eric Marcoullier. The category 'Sunset' has - Delicious, Altavista, MyBlogLog, Yahoo! Bookmarks, Yahoo! Picks - which means going to die.
The second category 'Merge' covers - Upcoming, FoxyTunes, Sideline, FireEagle, Yahoo Events and Yahoo People Search - probably survive with some modifications or in new names.
The confirmation on 'killing' Buzz from Yahoo officials made fury among the Delicious users (Yahoo keeps silence over Delicious). Yahoo acquired Delicious (del.icio.us) in 2005 just two years after its launch. The deal was between $15 million and $30 million. Delicious is a social bookmarking web service for storing, sharing, and discovering web bookmarks.
Delicious is one of the most survived social bookmarking services with more than than 5.3 million users and 180 million unique bookmarked URLs. Rumors about the Delicious' sunset made the rise of Twitter and Facebook campaign, 'Save Delicious.' More than thousands of users have protested against Yahoo's plan to kill Delicious.
Experts opinionated that Yahoo may sell Delicious to a new company, shepherded to another or kill permanently.
