Pilikula (Karnataka), Dec.17 (ANI): The district administration of South Kanara in Karnataka has successfully preserved the artistic tradition of pottery by setting up an exclusive centre named 'Pilikula Heritage Village' near Mangalore.

Pilikula Heritage Village is around 35 kilometres off Mangalore, almost at the base of the Western Ghats.

The versatile potters of the region are active in this village.

Enterprising persons with artistic instincts also participate in the periodical workshops conducted here under the watchful eyes of ace potters.

Metallic utensils like stainless and aluminium kitchenware, decorative items and also glass had almost eclipsed the pottery items in the district.

Satish Kumar, a potter, said the Pilikula Heritage Village has been a boon for the families of traditional potters.

"We prepare various items like lamps, pots and also ornamental items. This is our family occupation. I have been trained for two years and engaged in this task for five years. Now there is a lot of demand for items prepare by us," said Kumar.

The trained potters rely on traditional methods to prepare earthen products, ranging from pots, vessels, vases, decorative items and assorted earthenware. By Harish Nayak (ANI)
