Rain continues in Chennai; Schools remain closed

Chennai, Dec 7: Heavy floods due to monsoon rains in Tamil Nadu have killed more than 170 people and left thousands evacuated on Monday, Dec 6. The continuos rains caused flooding situation in the low -lying pockets of Chennai, the capital city of the state.

The weather department has predicted that the heavy rain will continue in coming hours also. Government has announced holiday for schools in Chennai, Tiruvallur and Kancheepuram districts on Tuesday, Dec 7.

In Chennai, life has been deadlocked followed by the floods in almost all parts of the town. Many streets and roads in T Nagar, Purasawalkam, Egmore, interior Triplicane, Kodambakkam were still under water.

Sources reported that several parts of Chennai has been facing heavy traffic jams and power cuts. Many trees were uprooted and buildings collapsed.

The low-pressure area formed over the southeast Bay off Sri Lankan coast was causing the heavy rains. The Met department reported that heavy rains will continue for two more days.
