Manipur's developmental projects get a boost with Sonia Gandhi's November visit
Imphal (Manipur), Dec.2 (ANI): Last month's visit to Manipur by Congress president Sonia Gandhi has given a boost to the state and the northeast region's developmental projects.
Socio-economic development of the northeast region is on top of the government agenda. In line with this goal, many government-run developmental projects have been launched in Manipur recently.
Gandhi visited the state with Union Tourism Minister Kumari Selja on November 12. Both unveiled a number of developmental projects.
A multi-crore Khuga Dam in Churachandpur District was inaugurated to help farmers.
Khuga Dam project that cost 81-crore rupees was completed in two years and will also help in boosting tourism to the region.
"People in this area will find a new future and a new life. Irrigation will be given to the whole area that would bring progress to the inhabitants in the area," Gandhi said.
Three newly constructed buildings at Khwairamband Bazar, a tribal market at Lambulane and the Muslim Girls' Hostel at Hatta were inaugurated as well.
Gandhi also laid the foundation stone for the Manipur Campus of the Indira Gandhi National Tribal University and development of INA complex at Moirang as a tourist destination at an estimated cost of Rs.25 lakhs.
"We are firmly committed to development and growth of Manipur. And, we believe that development has to be inclusive and the benefit of that development must reach each and every section of Manipur society," Gandhi said.
Though a few civil organizations boycotted her visit, but a large number of womenfolk gathered at Kangla Fort to welcome Sonia Gandhi.
People condemned the boycott call and said development was the need of an hour.
"Nothing should come in the way of the state's development. The Congress President has come to look after our needs and welfare. We should welcome her," said Leirik Devi, a vendor.
"Imposing the boycott is not right. It will be a great loss for all of us, if we don't embrace development and progress in the state," said Shamjai, a local resident.
Manipur has been affected by militancy, which has stalled the growth and development of the state.
But gradually, developmental activities are gaining momentum with the concerted effort of all sections of the society and the government. (ANI)
