Brisbane leading the nation in rising online divorce applications
Melbourne, Nov 21 (ANI): The biggest surge of e-divorce applications is in Brisbane, with one in 10 people turning to technology to begin their divorce proceedings, according to statistics.
Queenslanders are leading the charge in applying for online divorces. And soon they could be sent a text message to alert them they are officially single, reports the Courier Mail.
With a click of a button, 1037 unhappy couples in Queensland in the past financial year lodged an application for divorce on the internet.
It comes as the Federal Magistrates Court is working on a plan to alert separated couples by text message or email as soon as their divorce has been granted.
It won't replace the official divorce documents but the blueprint provides for an "opt-in" system, allowing applicants to choose if they would like to be informed about their updated marital status.
And if trends continue, there could be a flurry of text messages sent to Queensland.
About 11,963 people in Queensland filed an application to end their marriage in 2009-10.
Family Law Courts chief executive officer Richard Foster said the online service did not allow for people to get automatically divorced online, but provided an alternate means to file. (ANI)
