Delhi: Building collapse kills 42, injures 90

New Delhi, Nov 16: More than 42 people were killed and other 90 injured when a six-storey building collapsed in east Delhi on Monday, Nov 15 night.

The building collapsed at around 8.15 pm in Lalita Park area of Laxmi Nagar. Media reported that the the building was weakened by accumulated floodwater from the nearby Yamuna and lead to the collapse.

Police officials told that 60 people were rescued but fears more trapped under the debris. The narrow lanes of locality made it difficult for emergency workers including cranes and ambulances to reach the accident site.

"32 people have been killed in the incident," Delhi Health Minister Kiran Walia said on Monday night. He also added that death toll was likely to increase.

Locals told media that the accident happened when a seventh floor added to the 15-year-old building. Delhi government ordered a magisterial inquiry into the incident.e

"The scale of the tragedy is unprecedented. I don't think such a tragedy has taken place in Delhi in the recent past," Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit said.
