Monica Bedi's conviction upheld, sentence reduced

The SC bench of Justices B Sudershan Reddy and SS Nijjar upheld the conviction of the actress annd girlfriend of the underworld don Abu Salem.
The apex court rejected Monika"s plea that she could not be convicted in India as it would amount to “double jeopardy" since she had been convicted by the Portugal court for the same offence.
However, handing Monica some relief, the SC reduced her sentence to the period of imprisonment she had already undergone, which is two-and-half years.
Monica was convicted and sentenced to five years imprisonment by a sessions court in Hyderabad. The sentence was later reduced to three years by the Andhra Pradesh High Court.
