US approves Blythe Power Project, world's largest

California, Oct 26: The US Interior Secretary, Ken Salazar approved The Blythe Solar Power Project on Monday, Oct 25. Its the world"s largest solar power project which will produce electricity by using heat from the sun.

$6 billion Blythe Solar Power Project, a joint venture of Solar Millennium AGand Ferrostaal AG, plans to provide electricity to more than 3,00,000 homes located in southern California.

"The Blythe Solar Power Project is a major milestone in our nation's renewable energy economy and shows that the United States intends to compete and lead in the technologies of the future," said US interior secretary, Ken Salazar.

The Blythe Solar Power Project is the sixth solar power project in United States approved by the US interior department in the last few days, will start transmitting electricity by the end of 2011 or early 2012.

All the six projects would generate more than 3,000 megawatts of power and provide electricity for up to 2 million homes. Nearly 2,000 jobs are also expected during the construction of the projects.
