India grabs 2 gold, 1 silver in Astronomy Olympics

Mumbai, Oct 25: After Commonwealth games 2010, gold medal continued to surge for Indians, as the students won two golds and one silver medal at the 15th International Astronomy Olympiad (IAO) held in Sudak, Crimea, Ukraine on Sunday, Oct 24.

Sharad Mirani (Ahmedabad) and R Sasibhushan Bharadwaj (Hyderabad) bagged gold medals, and Pritish Patil (Nashik) won the silver medal, Dr Aniket sule, academic coordinator of the Indian Astronomy Programme said.

The team was lead by Dr Manojendu Choudhury, Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education, Mumbai and Hemant Mone, Aakash Mitra Mandal, Kalyan from Maharashtra's Thane district.

A total of 19 teams from 17 countries participated in the Olympiad including China, Korea, Romania, Russia, Serbia, Italy, Indonesia and Thailand amongst others, Sule said.

The IAO competition consists of tests in astrophysical theory, astronomical data analysis as well as night sky observation.
