Kerala women to create history in civic polls

Thiruvananthapuram, Oct 23: The first phase of the local body elections has began on Saturday, Oct 23 in Kerala as the state has reserved half of the total seats for women.

Reports said the voting is brisk in rural areas while is yet to pick up in corporations and municipalities. Polling will take place in Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Kozhikode, Waynad, Kannur and Kasargod.

Further reports said a total of 9,238 seats are up for grabs spread around three-tier panchayats and urban civic bodies in first phase.

About 29,000 candidates are in the fray for the elections fought on political lines, mainly between the ruling CPI(M)-led Left Democratic Front and the Congress-led United Democratic Front.
