Melbourne, Oct 10: Four Australian police officers were fired, one demoted, five fined up to 3000 dollars and placed on 12-month good behaviour bonds, for spreading pornographic and racist emails through the police computer system about Indians.

On Oct 12 and Oct 15, nine more officers will front the disciplinary panel, with six to be heard the following week and 2 officers quit rather than face the secret hearings.

Many highest-ranked officers, were caught in a racist e-mail scandal joking about the electrocution of an Indian train passenger and suggesting that it could be "a way to fix the Indian student problem" in Melbourne.

The emails investigated by the Ethical Standards Department's Operation Barrot contain pornographic, homophobic, racist and violent material.

Chief Commissioner, Simon Overlandm, has described the e-mail, as "disturbing, offensive and gross."
