Sonia Gandhi to attend CWG grand opening ceremony

New Delhi, Oct 3: Congress chief Sonia Gandhi will be present at the grand opening ceremony of Commonwealth Games 2010, on Sunday, Oct 3, at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in New Delhi.

Sources said the Sonia Gandhi was expected to take her place in the "royal box" where Prince Charles and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh would be seated.

"Sonia Gandhi is conscious of her responsibilities and intends to attend the grand opening ceremony," sources said.

The Congress chief would also like to give a big hand to hundreds of school children and artists who will showcase their talents at ceremony.

There is no word yet on AICC general secretary, Rahul Gandhi's plans to attend the CWG opening ceremony.

Around 7,000 men, women and children will take part in the opening ceremony which is divided into 6 sections: Rhythm of India, Swagatam, Tree of Knowledge, Yoga, Great Indian Journey and AR Rahman's rendition of the CWG anthem "Jiyo Utho Badho Jeeto".
