Metro to Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium rolls out today

New Delhi, Oct 3 (ANI): The Central Secretariat-Sarita Vihar corridor of the Delhi Metro, which is a crucial link to the XIX Commonwealth Games main venue, the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, rolled out to the public on Sunday morning, hours before the opening ceremony of the sporting extravaganza.

The 15-kilometre corridor, which will make it convenient for people to attend the 2010 Games opening ceremony was inaugurated here this morning in the presence of Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) Managing Director E Sreedharan.

A brand-new Standard Gauge train began its journey from the Central Secretariat metro station at 8 a.m..

It has been reported that with the opening of the Central Secretariat-Sarita Vihar corridor, Delhi metro's ambitious Phase-II has almost been completed except the Airport Express Line.

"It is a matter of great pride and glory for all of us in Delhi Metro that the Badarpur line has been substantially opened up to Sarita Vihar. This marks almost the completion of our Phase-II project," said E Sreedharan, while interacting with the media here this morning.

Sreedharan further said the phase-2 was originally to be completed in March 2011, but the dates were advanced in view of the 2010 Games.

"We have advanced all the target dates and completed all the lines now except the airport line which is also complete but which is not able to get the safety certificate. We hope to get the safety certificate for the airport line also very shortly. So with this, the phase two work is over," said Sreedharan.

"Today, we have opened more than 100 kilometre in a matter of four and a half years. This particular line was sanctioned in May 2007. In exactly three years and four months the line has been completed. I think, it is a matter of great pride and satisfaction for all of us in Delhi Metro that we have been able to complete this before the Commonwealth Games," he added. (ANI)
