Supreme Court stays Madras High Court's order on closure of Sterlite Industries'
New Delhi, Oct 1 (ANI): The Supreme Court on Friday stayed the interim order of the Madras High Court on the closure of Sterlite Industries' copper smelting plant in Tamil Nadu's Tuticorin city.
This stay will be in operation till the date of next hearing on October 18.
Sterlite Industries had earlier approached the apex court seking a stay on the orders of the Madras High Court, which had ordered for the closure of copper smelting plant in Tuticorin.
Sterlite Industries has also filed a review petition in the Madras High Court seeking three weeks time to implement its order, saying the plant producing sulphuric and phosphoric acid cannot be shut down instantly.
Earlier on September 28, the Madras High Court ordered the immediate closure of Sterlite Industries' copper smelting plant in Tuticorin.
"We are constrained to take this decision, owing to voluminous material available on record about the negative impact of running of the industry at the place and in the manner it is being run," said a Division Bench comprising Justice Elipe Dharmarao and Justice N. Paul Vasanthakumar passing orders on a batch of writ petitions. (ANI)
