Aruna Roy gets Lal Bahadur Shastri National Award

New Delhi, Oct 1: The Lal Bahadur Shastri National Award was presented to social and political activist, Aruna Roy by President Pratibha Patil on Oct, 1 in New Delhi for her selfless dedication towards the issues of the common men.

Her broad based collective campaigns have helped ensure the passage of the Right to Information Law and the National Rural Employment Guarantee Act in Parliament in 2005, the citation said.

Accepting Rs 5 lakh award, Ms Roy said the money would be utilised to support the needs of the poor.
