Incessant rains affect 1.5 lakh hectares of land in Maharashtra's Marathwada region
Aurangabad, Sep. 16 (ANI): Incessant rains have badly damaged crops in Maharashtra's Marathwada region, causing heavy losses to farmers.
According to official estimates, about 1.5 lakh hectares of cropland has been destroyed by rains in this Marathwada region that comprises eight districts-Aurangabad, Nanded, Latur, Jalna, Beed, Parbhani, Osmanabad, and Hingoli..
"We were expecting a very high yield this year. But there were incessant rains in July and August. This resulted in 26 percent more rainfall than last year in the Marthwada region. We were expecting by the end of August that the loss might increase. The rain destroyed all the crops that were to be reaped early (in August), like 'Moong' (pulses), 'Urad' (pulses) and soybean. It was time to reap 'Moong', but rain has caused farmers to incur losses," said Satish Sirodkar, Agriculture Officer in the Agriculture Department of Marathwada region.
Gorak Trimbak Padat has suffered grave losses like thousands of other farmers.
"In the Marathwada region, heavy rains have severely destroyed our crops. In this situation, the government should conduct a survey in the region and help the farmers," said Padat. (ANI)
