AP: Mother tortures daughter to cover up affair

Hyderabad, Sep 15: Claiming to be a staunch believer of the parenting guideline 'Spare the rod and spoil the child', a mother in Andhra Pradesh beat up her six-year-old daughter with hot iron rods and inflicted cuts on her body with blades to 'discipline' the child.

The girl, identified Nartana, is now in the hospital recovering from nearly a year of torture, reported a private TV news channel.

The brutal case of child abuse came to light when a neighbour reported to the police that the mother, identified as Nagachaitanya, had confined the girl in a dark room for over four days without food and water, according to NDTV.

Nagachaitanya, who is separated from her husband, is allegedly having an affair. Fearing that her daughter would tell someone about the affair, she confined and tortured her daughter, the locals told the police.

The mother, who is a primary school teacher in Nellore, however, maintains that she was only disciplining her daughter.

The mother and her alleged lover have been taken into police custody and cases under the Girl Protection Act, as well as a case of torture have been registered against the duo, said the report published on Wednesday, Sep 15.
