Cabinet gives its nod to caste census from 2011

New Delhi, Sep 9: The Union Cabinet on Thursday, Sep 9 approved the inclusion of caste in census 2011.

The cabinet's nod came after a meeting, chaired by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, was held on the issue.

Announcing the cabinet's decision, Home Minister P Chidambaram said, "The option that has been approved is that caste must be canvassed and the integrity of the head count should not be affected."

"A separate house to house enumeration of the caste will be done during the period between June to Sept, 2011," he informed.
