Kerala woman gets threats for not wearing veil

Kerala
Kasargod, Aug 28: In a commendable display of bravery against fundamentalist forces, a young woman in Kerala, who received death threats for not wearing a veil, has stood up against the Talibanisque policing.

Rayana R Khasi had been receiving death threats from fundamentalists for not wearing the veil. Now, this 23-year old engineering graduate from Kasaragod has spoken out, a leading TV news channel reported.

"One man called me and threatened me. I got many such threatening letters, in that the man wrote that he will kill me," Rayana told NDTV.

Among the many threat letters that the woman received, one states that she would be killed if she does not wear a purdah by Aug 26.

Rayana, who sensed hesitation in police when she went to file a complaint, moved the High Court, which directed Kasaragod police to give her 24-hour protection, the report published on Saturday, Aug 28.

Besides this, her fight for freedom has also led to arrests of four suspects, including a member of Popular Front of India (PFI), the radical group that came into the media focus in Jul 2010 after it was involved in chopping off a lecturer's hand.
