Melbourne, Aug 25: An Indian national was jailed for 13 years by a court in Australia for allegedly raping a young university student in Melbourne.

The Indian national, Harjot Hundal Singh, rapped a 19 year old university student in Jun 2009. He was arrested at Melbourne airport a few days after the incident while trying to flee with a one-way ticket to Dubai and a connecting ticket to India.

The Victorian county court jailed Singh for 13 years and ordered him to serve nine years before being eligible for parole.

Media reported that in Jun 2009, Singh punched the student, grabbed and dragged her into his van. He drove the van for a few minutes and raped her.
