Keralites celebrate Onam, President greets nation

New Delhi, Aug 23: Indian President Pratibha Patil, Vice President Hamid Ansari and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh greeted the nation on the occasion of Onam.

"On the joyous occasion of Onam, I offer my heartiest greetings to all my fellow citizens and especially to the people of Kerala and wish them all prosperity and happiness," said Patil in her message.

"The festival of Onam celebrates the onset of harvest season and the mood of rejoicing is vividly captured in the colourful festivities transcending all barriers. May the festival usher in peace, prosperity and happiness in the society and contribute towards the nation's progress," said Vice President Hamid Ansari.

Keralites celebrate Onam on Monday, Aug 23 to express their gratitude for the home coming of their benevolent king Mahabali and in memory of the happy days of his rule.

As Onam is a festival of flowers, the multi-coloured floral decorations are an essential part of the celebration.
