Health ministry team starts probe on UP kids death

Lucknow, Aug 23: A special team from the central Health Ministry started investigation into the death of four infants after applying of spurious vaccines in Lucknow.

On Sunday, Aug 22 four infants died after allegedly applying spurious vaccines on them in three villages on the outskirts of the Uttar Pradesh capital. Police had filed a FIR against two doctors and three health officials.

The four-member team, led by Ajay Khera, Deputy Commissioner (Immunisation Division), reached in Lucknow on Sunday evening and visited each of the villages where the immunisation was carried out. Team questioned the suspended doctor and paramedical staff involved in the vaccination process.

The team discussed the issue with Lucknow's Chief Medical Officer AK Shukla, district project officer (Immunisation) Vinod Kumar and District Magistrate Anil Kumar Sagar.

"We would completely rule out the use of expired vaccines, but it is possible that there was some break in the cold-chain which is important for preserving such vaccines," said Ajay Khera.

"It is not possible to arrive at any conclusion until we get an analysis report of the vaccines used on the victims," he added.
