Onam feast goes online
Former Minister of State for External Affairs and Ex-UN diplomat, Shashi Tharoor has already given his followers on Twitter a feel of the excitement that grips the community in this part of the year.
"Onam recipes: http://www.indiavideo.org/onam-recipes/ (full disclosure: haven't tried them myself, but voice on video is my sister Shobha)," the Triruvananthapuram MP tweeted on Aug 17.
The website that the Congress leader is talking about - Indiavideo.org, which boosts to be first of its kind website portraying the geographical, and cultural marvels of a country, has tied-up with the Kerala Tourism department to ensure that the festival spirit of Onam spreads to all this year.
Indiavideo.Org has posted video guides and recipes of the dishes that comprise the grand Onam 'sadya' online. This includes dishes of ritualistic importance such as the 'poovada' (steam-baked pan cake).
“Onam is the most important celebration of Keralites and a sumptuous traditional feast is the core of festivities. Around 1.85 million Keralites work outside Kerala and the video guides will help them to prepare the sadya at home," said the spokesperson of the website, expressing hope that the videos will appeal to non-Malayalees as well as the video narration is in English.
“In this era of consumerism, we hope this service would inspire Keralites to discover the joy of traditional feast preparation, reunion and togetherness," the spokesperson added.
