Media reported that Apple Inc is planning to launch a mini iPad in Dec 2010. The new version will be 200 grams lighter than the standard iPad. Apple launched the iPad in Apr 2010, and sold 3 million of the devices in 80 days.

Chinese newspaper, Sky News, reported the launch of the mini iPads. It reported that the two Taiwan companies won contracts to make components smaller than those used on the current iPads. This newspaper had also correctly predicted the specifications of the iPad months before its release.

iPad was particularly marketed as a platform for audio and visual media such as books, periodicals, movies, music, and games and web content. It's size and weight are between those of most contemporary smartphones and laptop computers.
