SC asks law ministry to amend dowry law

Supreme Court of India
New Delhi, Aug 16: The existing dowry law in India should go through some changes, said the Supreme Court to the Law Commission of India and the Law Ministry.

The court stated that the relevant provision, 498-A of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), which deals with cruelty by a husband and his relatives over dowry demand had been misused.

According to CNN-IBN, the existing dowry law, which was introduced 27 years back, was to help the wife from harassment by her husband and her in-laws in the name of dowry.

Beside serving its purpose properly, the law had been abused by some unscrupulous elements from several years.

According the channel, the SC had drawn the attention of the legislature to the need to amend the law.
