Centre backs Mayawati's Ambedkar Memorial Park

New Delhi, Aug 13: Central Government supported the Ambedkar Memorial Park developed by Mayawati's government in Noida.

On Friday, Aug 13 Centre told the Supreme Court (SC) that environmental clearance was not required for the Ambedkar Memorial Park.

SC asked the Centre to explain whether the Ambedkar Memorial Park is a building project, construction project or an area development project.

Earlier, the Centre told that it could not give environmental clearance for construction of statues and memorials for Dalit leaders at the park.

In Oct 2009, after filing a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) by environmentalists, SC given a stay order to the controversial park being constructed adjacent to a bird sanctuary. SC asked to stop the construction till a complete investigation was undertaken on whether environment laws were flouted.
