Georgetown (Malaysia), Aug.3 (ANI): Temple committees organising Phor Thor (Hungry Ghost Festival) celebrations in Penang this year have been advised to stage Chinese operas instead of performances by sexy showgirls.

Penang Teong Guan Association adviser Datuk Lim Yam Koi said the Tai Su Yeah (King of Hades) deity "does not fancy scantily-dressed singers".

"There is no point in spending so much money for these performances, which can cost up to RM 10, 000 per night. If the deity is not happy, he will not be present at the event," The Star quoted him, as saying.

"The deity did not ask for such performances. It's the Phor Thor committees that want it," said Lim, adding that sexy stage shows were "meaningless" to the festival.

He said, traditional opera performances from China only cost between RM2,000 and RM3,000 per night and had been gaining popularity of late. (ANI)
