London, August 3 (ANI): Former Labour leader Gordon Brown has been named the third worst Prime Minister since World War II, a survey by more than 100 leading academics revealed.

According to The Sun, academics led by University of Leeds Professor Kevin Theakston rated him tenth out of the 12 post-war premiers, ahead of Sir Anthony Eden and Sir Alec Douglas-Home, two men who have long been associated with failure.

They were being polled on how much the nation's leaders achieved while in No 10.

Brown's only real success was his action to prop up the banks during the credit crisis. Building up record government debt is seen as his biggest failure. He was also slated for bottling a general election in 2007, the paper states.

The poll rated Labour's post-war Prime Minister Clement Attlee, architect of the National Health Service (NHS), easily topped the poll with a score of 8.1. He is followed by Margaret Thatcher, who scored 6.9, while Tony Blair came next to her with 6.4 score.

The poll list is as follows-

1. Clement Attlee 1945-1951

2. Margaret Thatcher 1979-1990

3. Tony Blair 1997-2007

4. Harold Macmillan 1957-1963

5. Harold Wilson 1964-1970

6. Winston Churchill 1951-1955

7. James Callaghan 1976-1979

8. John Major 1990-1997

9. Edward Heath 1970-1974

10. Gordon Brown 2007-2010

11. Alec Douglas-Home 1963-1964

12. Anthony Eden 1955-1957
