BJP to use by-poll results to press for Telangana

New Delhi, Jul 31: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is now set to make use of the people's mandate in Telangana by-polls to pressurise Congress into carving out a separate state of Telangana.

Hailing its victory in the Telangana by-polls, the BJP on Friday, Jul 30 said that the verdict was in favour of the region's demand for separate state.

Out of the 12 constituencies polled in the by-elections, one seat was won by the BJP while 11 seats were grabbed by the Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS), the party that has spearheaded the Telangana agitation. TRS had campaigned in favour of BJP.

"This is the people's verdict for Telangana. Now the Congress should not delay the formation of a separate state as both the states of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh will co-exist peacefully and prosper rapidly," BJP in-charge of Andhra Pradesh and party spokesperson Prakash Javadekar said.

Javadekar has also moved a resolution in the Rajya Sabha on the formation of Telangana and was hopeful that it would come up for discussion in the Upper House on Aug 6.
