Shiv Sena demands PM's intervention in Belgaum
New Delhi, Jul 27: The Shiv Sena protested at the main gate of Parliament House seeking Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's intervention in resolving the dispute between Maharashtra and Karnataka over Belgaum.
The protest on Tuesday, Jul 27 was led by the senior Shiv Sena leader Manohar Joshi. Protesters held placards demanding PM's intervention in the dispute.
Earlier on Wednesday, Jul 7 UPA government's affidavit told the Supreme court that Belgaum should stay with Karnataka and the area could not be made a part of Maharashtra merely because a majority of the population there speak Marathi.
Belgaum, currently a part of Karnataka and earlier was the part of Bombay Presidency. Belgaum was claimed by Maharashtra on linguistic grounds as the majority population speaks Marathi there.
