Khap continues protest against same gotra marriage

New Delhi, Jul 27: Leaders of Khap panchayats had come together in New Delhi on Monday, Jul 26 to protest the same gotra marriage.

The demand to amend the Hindu Marriage Act and to ensure inter-gotra marriages to be made illegal, over 250 khap panchayats from different parts of the country came in the meeting.

"Government should not let brothers and sisters marry. We are all part of the same gotra which means the same blood line. We don't advocate killing anyone. But genetic problems arise due to inter-gotra marriage," said one khap leader to CNN-IBN.

Khap leaders had clearly said that they have no role to play in the honour killing cases but the government should maintain that inter-gotra marriages won't be allowed.

"The khaps are not involved in honour killing," said another khap leader to CNN-IBN.

But at the same time another Khap leader said, "we will block roads to register our protests if our demands are not met."
