Panchayats write 'I am poor' on tribal homes
Seoni (Madhya Pradesh), Jul 23: In a remote village of Golaganj in Madhya Pradesh tribals live with a declaration painted on their walls 'I am Poor'
This insulting disclosure was forced by the local panchayats with an intention to indicate families who are genuinely Below Poverty Line (BPL) so that they can collect their rations.
One of the Bheekham's families said,"It is very painful to be branded like this. Now that everyone has come to know we are poor, it will be difficult to get proposals for our daughter."
The print is being removed after the panchayats were embarrassed by the media. It was not the first time that tribals fought for their dignity. To fight against the authority tribals have lodged a complaint to the National Human Rights Commission.
