Tamil daily editors arrested for extortion
Madurai, Jul 22: Based on a complaint from Madurai Granite Quarry Owner's Association president P Periasami, two editors, S Manimaran and M Rameshkumar of Tamil daily, Dina Bhoomi were arrested for demanding huge money and for publishing false news on granite in the region of Madurai, on Wednesday, Jul 21.
According to the complainant, the company alleged that the newspaper published a series of news items which were misleading about the granite business in the region. The newspaper demanded huge sums for not publishing the news items, following which Rs 5 lakh was given.
The editors of the newspaper also threatened to tarnish the image of granite quarry owners and pasted posters every day causing irreparable damage.
After registering a case under the IPC Sections 341(punishment for wrongful restraint), 384 (extortion), 387 (causing fear of death), 294 b (obscene acts in public) and 392 read with 511 (robbery and attempt to commit criminal offence), the Tallakulam police arrested S Manimaran and M Rameshkumar from their residence.
