High-level meet on illegal mining likely on Jul 20

New Delhi, Jul 20: Media reports say that Prime Minister's office is believed to have called a high-level meeting on Tuesday, Jul 20 to discuss about the issues on illegal mining. The official confirmation is not yet arrived either from the PMO or the Mines Ministry.

The sources from Mines Ministry said that the meeting will be held on Tuesday, Jul 20 and the issue of illegal mining and policy issues related to iron ore exports will be discussed during the conference. The meeting comes ahead of the Empowered Group of Ministers (EGoM) conference on the new mining act scheduled for Jul 22.

The issue of illegal mining was brought up by Congress and JD(S) alleging Reddy brothers, the ministers in Karnataka government led by BJP government with illegal mining. Chief Minister BS Yeddyurappa denied the allegation saying that there was no evidence against the ministers.

EGoM, consisting 10 members is scheduled to sort out the inter-administrative issues over the proposed mining legislation, called Mines and Minerals Development and Regulation Act. The EGoM will be headed by Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee.
