How we evolved from apes to humans

Washington, July 13 (ANI): Scientists have found that as human brains evolve, they become less like apes, according to a new study.

The areas of brains that help in language and reasoning-grow about twice as much as regions associated with basic senses such vision and hearing, said study leader Jason Hill, a neurobiologist at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri.

"It is evolutionarily advantageous to put those resources more into the maturation of regions that are better suited to early survival, such as being able to see and recognize your mother," National Geographic News quoted Hill as saying.

The study that compared human-brain scans with brain scans of macaque monkeys could help researchers understand why brain development of premature babies goes awry.

Findings appear online this week in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. (ANI)
