TN: Electoral roll details just an SMS away

Chennai, Jul 6: Voters here can now access any key information pertaining to their electoral roll through Short Messaging Service (SMS).

The initiative taken up by Chennai Corporation in collaboration with Airtel was launched on Tuesday, Jul 6 by Chief Election Commissioner Navin Chawla.

“Under the scheme, the first of its kind in Tamil Nadu, registered voters can send an SMS through mobile phones to access key details by typing 'Vote" followed by their EPIC number (Voter"s ID card number) and send it to 51913," said Corporation Commissioner Rajesh Lakoni.

Once the SMS is sent, the voter will receive details of his name, his/her father's name, the constituency, serial number and polling booths where he/she should vote.

If the voter does not receive the details after sending the SMS, it implies that the person's name is not present in electoral rolls.

In this case, Corporation Commissioner informed, voters should contact the electoral registration officers concerned in Chennai Corporation zonal office to get their names included in the rolls.

As of now, the SMS service is only available for residents of the city.
