Nirbhay Singh murder: 8 students arrested in TN

Chennai, Jul 6: Eight engineering students alleged to be involved in the murder of a Jharkhand student Nirbhay Singh, have been arrested in Chennai, reports a television news channel.

The students belong to the Sathyabhama Deemed University.

Nirbhay Singh who left his home to study engineering at the Dr MGR Deemed University outside chennai was murdered allegedly by other students from Jharkhand on Sunday, Jul 4. Nirbhay was returning home on a motorcycle after meeting a friend at Palavakkam shortly after midnight when he was knocked down by a car and attacked by a group of students with clubs.

Nirbhay was declared dead suffering a head injury, when taken to a private hospital in Adayar.

Police had informed the media that there was a rift between two group of engineering students over organising admissions. "Their modus operandi was to canvass in their hometown and bring students for engineering admissions under the management quota. They would take a commission from the parents. A large number of students, mostly from Bihar, Jharkhand, and Uttar Pradesh, are indulging in this kind of activity," police officer KN Murali had said.

One of the students Nirbhay was brokering ended up going to a rival college and the murder happened in the tussle over this.
