Kanpur (Uttar Pradesh), July 4 (ANI): Officials in Uttar Pradesh's Kanpur city on Sunday ordered an inquiry after it was found that the food served to Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh during his visit to the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) here on Saturday was adulterated.

It has been reported that the food that was to be served to Dr Singh was changed after it was found unfit for consumption.

"Some colouring agent was added to the lentils and the seeds of the muskmelon were insect-infested. So, these two items were found adulterated. We informed the SPG (Special Protection Group) about it and the food that was to be served to the Prime Minister was free of the adulterated food," said Ashok Misra, Chief Medical Officer of Kanpur.

"Action will be taken as per the Food Adulteration Act. City magistrate has been asked to take up the case. He has reached Indian Institute of Technology and will take action against the suppliers," he added.

The District Magistrate has also ordered the sealing of the shop from where the raw materials were fetched.

"The team must have taken the food from a good store knowing fully well that it is meant for high profile dignitary. So, we have asked that the shop should be sealed and action should be taken," said Mukesh Kumar Mesram, Kanpur District Magistrate.

Dr Singh was facilitated with an honorary degree of Science by the institute on the occasion. (ANI)
