26 CRPF jawans killed in Naxal attack

Raipur, Jun 30: In a ferocious attack on the security personnel, Maoists killed 26 Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel and injured several others in the Narayanpur district of Chattisgarh on Tuesday, Jun 29.

The incident took place three kilometres away from the CRPF camp in Dhaurai on the road which leads to densely forested Naxal controlled Abhujhmad area. 63 CRPF jawans were attacked near a drain in the Dhaurai forest area. The jawans were returning after a road-opening party.

Naxals used guns instead of landmines to attack the jawans, reported police officials. They opened fire from a hilltop on the road opening party at around 3 pm on Tuesday, Jun 29. The jawans tried to defend which resulted in the fierce gunbattle which lasted for three hours.

The troops were from the 39th battalion of the force and were a part of its 'E' and 'F' companies, informed CRPF DG Vikram Srivastava. The death toll could increased as the casualties are higher. The injured were rushed to Jagdalpur's Maharani Hospital.

The bodies of the deceased were brought to Raipur. The postmortem will be done in Raipur.
