ICANN approves .xxx domain

Brussels, Jun 25: The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) is set to implement .xxx top level domain for porn sites. This helps for the categorization of adult sites from mainstream web sites.

ICANN general counsel John Jeffrey announced at a public meeting in Brussels on Thursday, Jun 24 that the official approval has been given for the creation of porn internet domain. The approval will be implemented from Friday, Jun 25.

ICM Registry is the official applicant for the domain. Stuart Lawley, Chairman of ICM Registry welcomed the new decision and said that they expect the first .xxx domain to go live by early 2011. They had more than 110,000 pre-reservations for porn domains, he added.

Stuart Lawley said that it was a great news for those who want to enter or avoid the adult content. This move will make it easier to filter out the inappropriate content, he said.

"The .xxx extension will be one among a very small number of sponsored internet extensions and members of the sponsoring community will be able to register domains with the new ending. While most internet extensions are used for just about everything you can imagine, .xxx will be focused on providing an online home for those members of the adult industry who wish to self-identify and responsibly self-regulate," said Lawley, on behalf of ICM.

This plan was suggested a decade before. Initial approval for .xxx was provided in 2005, but it was declined following the protests from politically conservative groups.
