Centre to file fresh petition on Bhopal tragedy
New Delhi, Jun 21: The Group of Ministers (GoM) on Bhopal gas tragedy decided to file a new petition in the case, said Home Minister P Chidambaram on Monday Jun 21.
Chidambaram said the media after the GoM meet that a fresh petition would be filed in the case. GoM wanted to give enhanced compensation to the families of the victims of gas tragedy and to those who are affected permanently or partially. Chidambaram said that all legal costs would be borne by the government.
He said that he will submit the report to Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh at 3.30 pm on Monday, Jun 21, in which they will also request the extradition of Warren Anderson.
They have decided to come up with a 'clean-up' project at the gas plant site in Bhopal to bury toxic material there. They have also decided to pay Rs five lakh for the victims with permanent disability and Rs three lakh for those with partial disability besides Rs ten lakh for the kin of those dead.
