UK Home Secretary urged to maintain tough attitude towards militants
London, June 20 (ANI): British Home Secretary Theresa May has been urged to maintain a tough attitude towards Muslim militants and clamp down on provocative demonstrations at Army homecoming parades.
The Daily Express quoted senior Tory MP Patrick Mercer as saying that May must avoid political correctness and curb protesters intent on marring special days reserved for returning soldiers.
He also suggested issuing the police with guidelines advising that such inflammatory actions were a potential breach of public order legislation.
His comments came after extremists hurled abuse at soldiers from the Royal Anglian regiment in Barking, East London, last Tuesday.
Mercer said: "Obviously there's a balance to be struck between freedom of speech and inflammatory behaviour.
"The last government allowed our enemies too much rope and, as a result, decent Muslims and our fighting men and women had to absorb far too much abuse. The police have to have firm and proper guidance from the Home Office to show them how our laws can be enforced fairly and they must not be allowed to be strangled by political correctness," he added.
